Wayside exhibits, publications, and more bring your compelling stories to life. Interpretive writing and design is a unique art that I have studied for over 30 years. To be successful, interpretation must be relevant, captivating, and meaningful. It must spark curiosity, focus on the unique qualities of the site, tell a compelling story that shares the site’s values, and be interesting and engaging. Those make the experience memorable. Interpretation reveals what things mean, how they fit together, and why they matter. The best interpretation touches the heart and creates an emotional connection.

Interpretive media includes all elements of the interpretation effort. Interpretation media is different from wayfinding and information signage and general site publications, however, interpretation themes and interpretation design should overlap with those to present a coordinated, themed appearance to all signage and publications. This purposeful design overlap reinforces the quality of the site experience and echos the sites’ most important themes and stories.
Interpretation planning identifies the sites’ most important stories, the stories that make the site distinctive and showcase its natural and historic features. This identifies locations for interpretation and the messages critical to understanding and appreciating site purpose, character, and value. Once identified, these stories can be told through programs, publications, wayside exhibits, and more.
Wayside exhibits
Working closely with staff and subject matter specialists, I have created a variety of publications, wayside exhibits, interior exhibit concept plans, and material for children, families, and other defined groups.
Wayside exhibits are among the most memorable interpretive media – they place the story with the resource. The best wayside exhibits are placed where visitors can read the exhibit, then raise their eyes and see the subject before them, immediately connecting the message with the resource itself. Following are examples from my portfolio. I have created signage in ImageLOC steel, high pressure laminate, Novalloy anodized aluminum, porcelain enamel, and other products. Publications range from children’s activity booklets, Jr. Ranger booklets, trail guides, and wildflower, wildlife, and bird checklists. I work closely with you make each specific to your site and audience.
